Appliances are meant to last for many years, but they certainly don’t last forever. If you’re wondering whether or not it’s time to replace some of the appliances in your home, you’re in luck: We spoke with professionals who share five common warning signs that it’s time to make a new purchase.
They are over 10 years old
Appliances aren’t designed to last forever, and it’s important to monitor yours over time to ensure they’re working properly.
ZLINE Appliance Market Expert Alexis Novacek explains that while all major appliances have different life expectancies, it’s recommended to re-evaluate your appliances every 10 years.
That said, not all devices that are ten years old will be in the same condition; some will perform much better than others at this point.
“Paying close attention to proper appliance care and maintenance, including following a regular and consistent cleaning schedule, are fantastic ways to increase the life expectancy of any appliance,” says Novacek.
Novacek explains that this is especially true for stoves, wall ovens, microwaves and range hoods, as they are more prone to grease and food debris buildup.

Their technology is obsolete
Every year, home appliances become more technologically advanced, so it makes sense to want to upgrade yours if you think newer, more sophisticated models might better suit your needs.
Jessica Petrino, an educator and appliance expert at AJ Madison, explains how many appliances today offer technologies that make cooking, meal prep, and cleaning more seamless.
“Stoves can help bring meals to the table with step-by-step recipes, AI-powered refrigerators can learn your habits and adapt to maximize efficiency, and dishwashers can automatically dispense detergent for sparkling clean dishes every time,” Petrino says.

Repairs are too expensive
In some cases, replacing an appliance entirely may be a better financial option than paying a repairman to come and fix it. Petrino explains why maintaining an appliance can be costly without a protection plan.
“For more expensive appliances like built-in refrigerators or commercial ranges, you’ll probably want to schedule an appointment with a brand-certified technician to diagnose the problem,” Petrino says.
As a first step, Petrino always recommends calling the customer service department of the company where you purchased your device, as some problems can often be solved with a simple task.
When it comes to purchase protection plans, Petrino is a proponent of purchasing them when possible.
“With current inflation, the cost of replacing food for a broken refrigerator will likely cover the cost of the protection plan itself,” she says. “Appliances, such as ice makers, water dispensers and electronics, may require maintenance throughout their lifespan.”
Your appliances are not energy efficient
Not all appliances are as eco-friendly as they could be, and Petrino says consumers are increasingly willing to upgrade their appliances in favor of greener options. The good news is that looking for greener alternatives doesn’t have to be expensive, either.
“Many utility companies encourage the replacement of old, energy-hungry appliances such as air conditioners or refrigerators,” she explains.
Petrino explains how you might find rebates that will lower the cost of newer, more energy-efficient models.
Looking to reduce your water bill?
Looking to save more water and lower your bill? It’s time to say goodbye to that top-loading washing machine, Petrino notes, explaining that these machines use three times more water than front-loading ones.
“Front-loading washing machines can also achieve much higher spin speeds,” she explains. “This means that clothes will be drier after the cycle, allowing the dryer to work less. Therefore, a washing machine with high spin speeds can also reduce electricity bills.”

They just don’t work
No one wants a vacuum cleaner that doesn’t pick up all the crumbs on your floor, a toilet that clogs frequently, or a microwave that takes a long time to heat your food.
If your appliances are having these issues, consider it a warning sign that they may be on the fritz, says Lance Sinclair, president of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning and Mister Sparky.
